"One night during July 1942 Iredale and Flying Officer John Lefroy McCaul RAF, also awarded Distinguished Flying Cross, Pilot and Navigator respectively, in aircraft detailted to attack enemy airfield. While over target area intensive searchlight activety and anti aircraft fire encountered. Iredale defied opposition and bombed aerodrome and obtained hits on Runway being used. Throughout operation Iredale was greatly assisted by McCaul whose accurate navigation in face of great difficulties was of highest order. Both displayed great courage and determination."
