The following press article describes why Jakob Fuchs received the Knight’s Cross…

“At the start of 1944 Jakob Fuchs once again returned to the Eastern front, where he would distinguish himself as a heroic defender first in the Tarnopol pocket and later during the heavy fighting in the great Vistula bend. Here he led his Kompanie with prudence and decisiveness for a prolonged period of time. Often being positioned at the hotspots of the battle, he and his men succeeded in inflicting heavy losses on the foe through energetically led counterthrusts. During a hostile breakthrough attempt on the 19.08.1944 Unteroffizier Fuchs attained firm control over his Kompanie and prevented the Soviet aim in bloody close combat. Although he received 3 bullet wounds he immediately joined in a friendly counterattack and thereby contributed to holding the position long enough for friendly Panzers to bring relief and thereafter carry forward our own attack.”
