Citation:
"For distinguishing himself by gallantry in action against the enemy on 5 March 1945 at Schwarzmaar, Germany. While in a defensive position, Lt. Higle's platoon was subjected to intense enemy artillery, mortar and tank fire and then a fierce counterattack by a numerically superior enemy force. Realizing that it was impossible for his platoon to stop the oncoming enemy without tank support, Lt. Higle ordered his platoon to withdraw to more effective firing positions. With complete disregard for personal safety, het refused to withdraw with his men but remained and directed effective artillery fire upon the enemy forces. Lt. Higle's aggressive leadership, devotion to duty, and couregeous actions contributed materially to the successful repelling of the enemy forces and were in credit to himself and to the Armed Forces of the United States."
