Biography

John Macarthur was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Materia Medica at the University of Aberdeen in 1939. His career was interupted by the Second War and following distinguished war service with the R.A.M.C. he returned to Aberdeen were he held Registrar and Senior Registrar Posts at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary. In 1949 he was appointed Pollock Lecturer in Materia Medica at the University of Glasgow, a post he held until his retirement. He was also a Consultant Physician at Stobhill Hospital Glasgow. He died on 8 May 1988.

"During the operation of crossing the river Gari on 11 and 12 May, 1944, the battalion attack on Pt.63 on 13 May and subsequent operations leading up to the capture of Cassino on 17 May, Captain Macarthur was continuously moving out under fire to assist in the evacuation of casualties of the Battalion and other units. At all times he showed complete disregard for his own personal safety. The work of the Medical Officer and the stretcher bearers under him was beyond all praise, and his cheerful work under fire and care in the evacuation and treatment of wounded was very fine example to all ranks.”
