During the middle of March 1944 the 1. and 3. Kompanien of Panzergrenadier-Regiment 114 launched a counterattack with the aim of recapturing the town of Davidkowy, which had been heavily fortified by the Soviets. However the German attack bogged down under the heavy Soviet fire.

Taking advantage of a favourable opportunity in the otherwise critical situation, Gefreiter Richter was able to enter the Soviet positions at the edge of the village and eliminate 4 MG nests and an anti-tank gun position. He then stormed into the depths of the village, with the two Kompanien following behind him. After a fight that lasted for hours, the Germans were finally able to wrest control of the place following bitter close combat.

By his actions here Gefreiter Richter had snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. Furthermore, by ensuring the capture of Davidkowy, he had also enabled the front to be straightened out, an achievement of great tactical significance. As a result he would be awarded the Iron Cross First Class and later the Knight’s Cross.
