Biography

Gerardus Wouter Gruijthuijzen was born on December 9th, 1913 in Utrecht as the son to Theodorus Hendrikus Gruijthuijzen (May 27th, 1882, Utrecht - April 9th, 1957, Utrecht) and Theodora Anthonia Gruijthuijzen-Vernooij (December 18th, 1879, Utrecht - November 14th, 1940, Utrecht).
He was marine engineer on board the s.s. Simon Bolivar, which on November 18th, 1939 struck two mines and sunk. Supposedly he was injured when the first mine exploded and fell overboard when the second exploded. He was killed in the event and his remains have never been found.
