Biography

Was reported wounded on November 4th, 1944. But those reports are for the 24 hours ending on 09:00 am. Probably wounded on the 3th. The War Diary of the 1st Battalion, East Lancashire Regiment reports for that day: "Patrols heard and saw enemy on the far side of the canal but only for a few moments. Contact was made with the Belgians before dawn and before midnight. "A" Coy patrol returned form the bridge 654936 at 2300 hrs and encountered a trip wire, suffering three casualties."

Location 654936 is the old Ell Bridge over the Wessem-Nederweert Canal between Ell and Kelpen-Oler. The old bridge was just south of the current bridge. Halstead was transferred to a hospital in Geldrop and died there of his injuries on November 7, 1944. He was temporarily buried in Geldrop before being transferred to the cemetery in Mierlo.
