On 25 June 1943 at 11.22 pm, the Handley Page Halifax DK180 "ZL-A" of 427 Squadron took off from Leeming in Yorkshire to take part in an attack on Gelsenkirchen.
At 2:34 am the Halifax was shot down by a German night fighter and crashed on the Helderseweg near Alkmaar.
The six other crew members were able to leave the aircraft by parachute.
