On the 31.01.1944, south of Wyriza (near Saoserje), the Soviets managed to block the retreat route of a Kampfgruppe belonging to the 24. Infanterie-Division with strong forces. Hauptmann Neubert and his Bataillon (minus its 8. Kompanie) had the mission to reopen the road no matter what. Neubert realized, however, that it was necessary to do something other than a frontal attack to achieve victory. He decided to lead his men through the snow covered swamplands without being detected, and then launched an attack into the rear of the Soviets. Position after position fell. After clearing the blocking position he then turned his Bataillon around and continued to advance until contact was made with the neighbouring unit.

By this action Neubert opened up the way to Saoserje for his Kampfgruppe, and was for this action decorated with the Knight’s Cross.

On the 03.03.1945 the Grenadier-Regiment 31 found itself fighting in Courland, near Lielblidiene. In the following days the Soviets fought to break through across the road leading east from Frauenburg. The Soviet 5th Tank Corps managed to break-in at the boundary between the 19. lettische SS-Division and the 24. Infanterie-Division. The massive gap that formed here in the forests NW of Molkerei Lielblidiene, which was of great danger to the German defense, was however closed by reinforcements under the command of Oberstleutnant Neubert after hard fighting. For his actions here, which were of great tactical significance, Neubert would receive the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.
