The following press article, dated 19.07.1943, describes how Johann Krieg would receive the Knight’s Cross…

“The Führer has at the suggestion of the Supreme Commander of the Kriegsmarine, Großadmiral Dönitz, awarded the Knight’s Cross of the Iron Cross to Oberleutnant zur See Johann Krieg and the Schreiberobergefreiter Walther Gerhold. This has been done in recognition of the sinking of an enemy cruiser in the Seine Bay during an operation with a one-man torpedo.

Krieg understood the need to pass on his own decisiveness, energy and attacking spirit to the men of his Kampfgruppe. For this reason he has a decisive share in their successes. This was in spite of his being very unsuccessful on the first night of operations.”
