“During the combat along the Invasion front an Ost-Bataillon (commanded by Major Becker) and a German unit had the joint mission of preventing enemy thrusts across the Vire river and towards Carentan from the hostile beachhead east of the Vire estuary. The Bataillon consisted predominantly of Russians as well as a small number of Ukrainians and volunteers from other regions of the East. In this time they resisted as bravely and determinedly as the German soldiers, with whom they fought alongside shoulder to shoulder.”
