Awarded for his successes while serving as an observer for Eduard Skrzipek. By this time he had participated in over 300 sorties. By the spring of 1943 Skrzipek and his crew (including Ellmer) had destroyed 45 aircraft on the ground, 3 aircraft in the air and 22 trains. After being transferred to the 14.(Eis./N.)/KG 27 Ellmer would go on to assist in the destruction of a further 43 trains.
