Awarded for his command achievements related to the Anzio bridgehead. Within 48 hours of taking over the newly formed I. Fallschirm-Korps (including the equally new 4. Fallschirmjäger-Division) he was alerted to the allied landing at Anzio. Responding rapidly, and taking advantage of the Allied hesitation at the beach, he swiftly brought up his forces and they were the first to form a coherent front around the beachhead. He then held firm to the ring around the beachhead until relieved by the 14. Armee.
