Awarded for distinguishing himself during October 1943. In this time his Division was engaged in heavy defensive combat near Bobrowa along both sides of the Dubrowno—Ljady road and near Barsuki. Particularly fierce fighting developed near Bobrowa, Chandogi and Wolkolakowka. In this time Bartkowiak and his Zug served as the regiment’s most relied upon reserve, and in this capacity they fulfilled their duty superbly. The bravery and readiness of Bartkowiak himself significantly contributed to the prevention of decisive Soviet breakthroughs at the last minute.
