Awarded for distinguishing himself as a bomber pilot and Staffelkapitän. He particularly distinguished himself during the capture of the Tatoi airfield (near Athens). Here his Do 17 was the first German aircraft to land at the airfield, and after landing he took a group of Greek pilots prisoner. He and his Staffel also achieved great merit during the tank battle near Grodno, foiling an attack by a Russian tank brigade that threatened the German frontline.
