Gruppenführer, 5. Kompanie, II. Bataillon, Grenadier-Regiment 76 (motorisiert), 20. Panzergrenadier-Division, Heer
Awarded on:
October 2nd, 1943
Awarded for his actions in the Nowossokolniki area. The following report, written by de Buhr himself on the 10.01.1944, describes what exactly led him to receive the high award…

“On the 26.07.1943 our Bataillon had the mission of creating a defensive front around the village A. opposite strong enemy forces that were pursuing us from the village of O. In this context elements of our Bataillon attack Hill X (500 metres northeast of A.) in order to throw the enemy forces located there back towards the east. After initially good progress the attack of my Kompanie became pinned down due to the activity of several enemy heavy machine-guns on the flank of the Bataillon.

As the leader of the Kompanie’s reserve squad, in this situation I resolved to launch a surprise flanking thrust against the enemy heavy machine-guns. I set out with my squad of 6 men. Although my machine gunner no. 1 fell during the battle, I personally took over his duties and we managed to eliminate 5 enemy heavy machine-guns.”
