Second World War (1939-1945)
Rank:
Major
Unit:
Kommandeur II./Grenadier-Regiment 4 / 32. Infanterie-Division
Awarded on:
September 10th, 1944
Awarded for his actions during the summer of 1944. At this time he commanded a Kampfgruppe from the 32. Infanterie-Division that was attached to the 227. Infanterie-Division. During this time the Division fought between Ostrow and Modern, however enemy pressure forced it to pull back to the so-called ‘Sonnenvogel Line’. Here the Division and the attached elements of the 32. Infanterie-Division were formed into Gruppe Boekh and split up into three defensive blocks centred around Liepna, Gnilna and Manuchnawa.

With this contextual information in mind the following Wehrmachtbericht excerpt from the 03.08.1944 briefly describes why Busch was awarded the Knight’s Cross…

“Here Kampfgruppe Busch, thanks to the inspiring leadership of Hans Busch, achieved extraordinary successes while defending against Russian penetrations around Liepna. Major Busch showed personal bravery and proved capable of taking on any challenge.”
