The following wartime excerpt describes why Windisch received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberst Windisch led the northern group in the Narvik area with such outstanding skill that the enemy was unable to conclude the battle in their favour despite their repeated breakthrough attempts with very strong forces. His Ostmärkische Gebirgs-Jäger-Regiment constituted the core of this defensive effort. It was thanks to Oberst Windisch that his Regiment was able to withstand all the efforts of both weather and war to break it, which in turn enabled it to emerge victorious in the face of an enemy far stronger by every conceivable measure.”
