Awarded for actions near Kerch. When the Soviets succeeded in capturing a commanding hilltop, thereby creating a critical situation, Feldwebel der Reserve Schmied assembled a handful of Pionieren and launched a counterattack on his own initiative. This succeeded in driving the Soviets off the hill, and provided the German side with a much needed tactical victory. Schmied himself was heavily wounded during the battle.
