The following wartime excerpt describes why Lauch received the Knight’s Cross…

“Oberfeldwebel Karl Lauch… was sent to seal off an enemy penetration during the defensive battles northwest of Orel. At the time he was serving as a Zugführer in a Panzergrenadier-Regiment. Taking 22 men with him, he managed to smash the broken-in Bolsheviks and then exploit his initial success. Although he was wounded three times he managed to push forward and advance as far as the old main battle line.”
