During the battles of the 8. Panzer-Division in Hungary at the beginning of January 1944, Obergefreiter Schwarm distinguished himself in a special way. According to the Wehrmachtbericht of the 11.01.1945…

"Obergefreite Schwarm, motorcycle messenger in the staff of a Panzergrenadier-Regiment, destroyed 3 enemy tanks and 1 heavy anti-tank in close combat within the space of a single hour while he was conducting a motorcycle dispatch run north of the Danube."

For this action he received the Knight's Cross on the same day of the announcement.
