Hauptmann Schröder and his Flak-Batterie had the mission of providing air defense south of Beeck (in the area around Geilenkirchen) during the fighting for the Hürtgen forest. When the Americans began launching their attack towards Beeck on the 18.11.1944 with strong infantry and tank forces, Hauptmann Schröder independently decided to join the ground battle with his men and stop the Allied attack. Despite heavy artillery and infantry fire, he was able to repel repeated hostile assaults and launch counterattacks of his own. Due to his efforts the Allied penetration was stopped, and it was possible for a new defensive line to be constructed. For this he was awarded the Knight's Cross.
