Following a series of bloody battles, Oberst Hoppe and his Infanterie-Regiment 424 managed to seize the city and harbour of Schlüsselburg on the early morning of the 08.09.1941 following a bold coup-de-main. By this action the Regiment had the honour of being the German unit that finally broke the land connection with Leningrad and initiate the long siege of the city. Hoppe would be awarded the Knight’s Cross as a reward for this very important deed.

Awarded for the outstanding leadership of his Division during the fighting in Italy in 1944. The Division was named in the Wehrmachtbericht of the 06.07.1944 for repelling all enemy breakthroughs during the 1st Battle of Ancona, especially in the fighting around Osimo (01.-08.07.1944). It would go on to distinguish itself in the 2nd Battle of Ancona as well as combat around Ostra, Filetto, Cesano, Metauro, Gotenstellung, S. Marino, Rubicone, Montilgallo, at the Savio (south of Cesena) and near Bertinoro.
