Awarded for his achievements during the French campaign. During the heavy fighting around Stonne—Chemery on the 15. & 16.05.1940 he played a major role in defeating the French armoured counterattack here. He brought up infantry and Flak into position, while his own Batterie deployed from the march against the enemy tanks. A number of these were destroyed, and the rest pulled back. Gerloch would further distinguish himself during the battle of Calais in the time period 24.-26.05.1940. His personally directed fire destroyed two enemy batteries on the very first day, and two more would be destroyed by his Batterie in the remainder of the battle.
