In order to facilitate the attack plans of the 24. Infanterie-Division on the opening days of Barbarossa, the capture of Hill 342 (Kapellenberg) located to the east of Potylicz was crucial. Stabsfeldwebel Simm and his Zug, along with two attached squads, were able to capture the steep hill in a coup-de-main on the 24.06.1941. By this action he seized the cornerstone of the Soviet battle position located south of Rawa-Ruska, and in doing so was able to save much effort and blood for his Division. Simm received the Knight's Cross in recognition of his decisive actions here.

During the fighting in Courland in mid-March 1945 the right neighbour of the 24. Infanterie-Division (19. lett.SS-Division) came under a heavy enemy attack while fighting in the forests north of the Molkerei (near Lielblidiene). A gap was torn in its frontline. As the regiment immediately adjacent to the sector of the SS-Division it feel to the Grenadier-Regiment 31 to close the gap. This it was able to do successfully. During this operation Hauptmann Simm repeatedly distinguished himself, and so was awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight's Cross.
