On the 28.11.1942 Generalleutnant Höhne took over the so-called Gruppe ‘Laux’, which then took on his own name. This Gruppe was positioned in the Demyansk area and tasked with holding the corridor to the salient. Höhne and his men stood firm against a new Soviet offensive that was launched during this time with the aim of finally crushing the Demyansk salient, and thereafter Höhne would continue to distinguish himself as a commander until the salient was finally evacuated early the next year. For his successful defense of the Demyansk corridor during the last episode of its existence, Höhne would be awarded the Oakleaves to his Knight’s Cross.

Generalmajor Höhne and his 8. Infanterie-Division were able to conduct a surprisingly swift capture of the fortress of Grodno on the 23.06.1941. Making full use of an undamaged bridge over the Njiemen that was close to the fortress, they launched a swift advance over the river and took the fortress in an unexpectedly short time.

The thrust of the 8. Infanterie-Division over the Njemen and its capture of Grodno, successes largely due to the initiative of its commander, were of great operational importance for the right wing of the Armee to which it was attached. Höhne would be awarded the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.
