Awarded for his leadership accomplishments during the 2nd Battle of Izyum. During this time he took over leadership of his whole Regiment, and on the 17.08.1943 was able to recapture those parts of the main line of defense east of Dolgenkaja that had been lost the day before. On the 19.08.1943 the Regiment was overrun by Soviet tanks, but succeeded in beating back their infantry support in close combat. In this fight Ruge’s own I. Bataillon was able to destroy 8 T-34s in close combat.
