During the fighting south of Orel in July 1943, an attack of the II./Grenadier-Regiment 18 threatened to stall due to heavy Soviet flanking fire. However its commander, Major Höke, was able to get the attack back in motion while personally standing on a Sturmgeschütz. Leading his men from the front, Höke and his regiment were able to storm a heavily fortified enemy village in bitter house-to-house combat. For this successful action against the odds Höke would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
