During the bitter battles around Königsberg in early 1945, Oberleutnant Punkt and his Pioniere fought with the courage of desperation against Soviet tank formations and fought to the last man. The Kompanie was badly smashed in the process, and Punkt himself would be evacuated due to injury. However he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for the contribution of his Kompanie to the determined defense here.
