Biography

Farmer Reinder Sprietsma participated in the resistance out of his reformed belief. He was one of the founders of LO-Opsterland and consequently a member of the LO, the national organization to aid hiders.
He was arrested on August 9, 1944 when during a raid on his farm two Jewish hiders were found. He was transferred to the Scholtenhuis on the Grote Markt in Groningen, the HQ of the Gestapo and the SD. The two Jewish hiders, dr Abraham Simeon Jacobson (1897-1944) and Rosa Granaat ( 1888-1944), both KNO physicians (Throat-Nose-Ear) were deported to Auschwitz and gassed on September 6, 1944
Following interrogation, Sprietsma was imprisoned in the Huis van Bewaring in Groningen and transferred to Camp Vught on August 21, 1944. When the camp was evacuated on September 6, he was transferred to Oranienburg and put to work in Sachsenhausen. He died there of a pulmonary inflammation and was cremated.
Some sources mention Reinder Sprietsma was postumously awarded the Verzetsherdenkingskruis but his name doesn't appear in the records of said decoration. At the cemetery in Ureterp, a monument has been erected in his memory.
