Daily Herald Order of Industrial Heroism

The Daily Herald was the official organ of the Trade Union Congress.

The Daily Herald established the Order, commonly known as the "Workers' VC", in 1923 with the express purpose of honoring the bravery of those who had rescued their coworkers from harm or death.

The recipients of the Daily Herald Order received a medal, a cash prize and a certificate designed by Eric Gill, which depicts St. Christopher standing in front of a smoking chimney, carrying the baby Jesus across water to a walled garden (“a rose of Jericho”) with a red star hovering above it. Later certificates used a variation on Gill's design.

By the time the paper ceased publication in 1964, the prize had been awarded 440 times, sometimes with multiple prizes given for the same event.
