Generalmajor Kraiß and his Division participated in the early stages of Fall Blau as part of the 6. Armee. At one stage of this advance the Division was tasked with advancing to Stary Oskol. After identifying strong Soviet forces south of the village on the 05.07.1942, Kraiß used his skillfully deployed forward elements to cut off the hostile retreat route to the south via the Atamanskaja sector and to the east across the Oskol river. He then destroyed this Soviet group with the bulk of his Division, attacking from the north and northwest. For this impressive feat of arms he would be awarded the Knight’s Cross.
