    “Hauptmann Oesau has particularly distinguished himself as a fighter pilot. He succeeded in shooting down 20 enemy aircraft. His ceaseless readiness for duty and brave disposition have been recognized through the awarding of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”

    The commodore of a fighter wing Oberst Walter Ösau, who had received the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves and Swords from the Führer for 117 aerial victories against British-North American enemies, found a heroes death in aerial combat. In him the Luftwaffe loses one of their best fighter pilots and leaders.
