In doing so he made a major contribution in ensuring that the so-called Below pocket, which contained a number of Soviet formations, could be liquidated.

Awarded for his achievements as a Korps commander during the winter of 1944-45. During the battle of the Bulge his Korps would achieve the farthest advance by all German forces. In the time period 16.12.1944-19.01.1945 his Korps destroyed 620 enemy tanks among other things. On the 12.02.1945 Lüttwitz led a counterattack that managed to retake the eastern edge of the Reichswald. On the 04.03.1945 Lüttwitz was able to offer his 116. Panzer-Division for deployment elsewhere, which enabled the Armee to prevent an allied thrust to the undamaged Rhine bridges at Homburg and Moers. In the time period 11.02.-07.03.1945 Lüttwitz and his Korps destroyed a further 287 enemy tanks.
