Biography

Kenneth Earnshaw, born in Bridlington, Yorkshire, on June 23, 1918, moved to Canada with his family a year later, settling on a farm in Alberta. Educated at Camrose High School, he trained as a teacher in Edmonton and taught in Bashaw before enlisting in the RCAF. He married Mary Heather in November 1941.

After training in Canada and receiving his commission, Earnshaw was posted to England’s 50 Squadron in November 1942. By April 1943, instead of the usual inter-tour rest, he was recommended for 617 Squadron, arriving at Scampton after Dams Raid training had begun.

His plane was in the first wave and the second to attack Möhne Dam. The plane was hit multiple times by Flak and crashed on the far side of the dam. The mine was dropped too late and bounced over the Dam.
