Paul Kruger was a key figure in the Transvaal. He opposed British annexation (1877) and played a central role in the First Boer War (1880–1881). In 1883 he became president and remained so until the Second Boer War (1899–1902), in which he sought European support in vain. He died in Switzerland in 1904 and was later reburied in Pretoria.
