Tom was born on 25 June 1924 in Amsterdam and lived in Breda. He enlisted in the Royal Netherlands Army and was assigned as a second lieutenant to the Artillery Reconnaissance Unit (ARVA) of the Air Force. Due to the outbreak of revolutionary violence during the Indonesian struggle for independence, he was sent to the Dutch East Indies to help restore peace and Dutch authority. As a flight lieutenant, he flew an Auster reconnaissance aircraft in the East.

On 11 August 1947, Tom and soldier Klaas Terpstra from Ternaard were on a reconnaissance flight in the vicinity of Tasikmalaja when their aircraft was shot down. They were captured by republican fighters and murdered shortly afterwards. The date of death for both was given as 11 August; Tom was 23 years old. They have no identifiable grave.
