Biography

Leon Merrill Rhodenizer attended Acadia University and played basketball and American football. He reached the rank of major in the Canadian Forces. During World War II, Rhodenizer served with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders, commanded Company A and took part in the Allied invasion force in France in June 1944. Major Rhodenizer was captured by Waffen-SS troops during the Battle of Normandy.

During his captivity, Rhodenizer witnessed the murder of Canadian prisoners of war and (because he spoke fluent German) managed to prevent his guards from killing any more.
