Biography

Former KNIL Lieutenant Colonel Johan George Marinus Wastenecker fought at Grebbeberg in May 1940 and was appointed leader of the Order Service above the IJ River in 1943.

He settled in Huize Westerlicht in Alkmaar, where he escaped on foot on December 23, 1944, after a German raid. Later, he went into hiding in a Catholic church in Zaandam, disguised as the uncle of Chaplain Groot. During a raid following the assassination of a police officer, he managed to remain undetected, despite his role as commander of the Dutch Resistance and the ownership of a radio station.

The raid led to the arrests and execution of ten resistance fighters, including members of Trouw newspaper.

On May 6, 1945, Wastenecker issued orders of the day to his troops in Zaandam and spoke at the unveiling of the resistance monument at the Prince Bernhard Bridge on May 4, 1948.
