Description:
"Awarded for distinguishing himself during the defensive combat in the Yelnya salient during the middle of August 1943. In this time strong Soviet forces broke through the German lines and captured a commanding hill.
Despite being totally alone, Major Nädele succeeded in motivating his hard-fought unit to fight back in kind. Over the course of heavy combat (which largely took place in forested areas) he and his unit recaptured both the hill as well as a previously lost village, inflicting heavy losses as they did so. After this he continued to lead his men forwards to the old German frontline and thereby contained the Soviet penetration."
