20.07.1943: OMechMt, KIA when U-558 was sunk North West of Cape Ortegal in position 45°10' North - 09°42' West by 15 Torpex launched by Liberator F, US-Army A/S Squadron 19, 479. Group flown by C.F. Gallmeier and Halifax E, RAF Squadron 58 flown by G.R. Sawtell - remaining crew : 45 KIA and 5 survivors
