In September 1944, the Marine-Artillerie-Abteilung 531 was used in a landing operation between Reval and Narva as one of the handful of Marine units to be used in the infantry role. Despite their lack of specialization for this role the operation was a total success, in no small part thanks to the brave and skillful leadership of Kapitänleutnant Hoßfeld. For this he would receive the Knight’s Cross.
