Biography

Hans Schönebeck was killed in action on March 25th, 1945 near Burgstädtel in the area of Leobschütz in Czechoslovakia. Up till now his body has not been buried at any cemetery. His name has been entered in the memorial book of the cemetery at Valasske Mezirici.

Awarded for his Bataillon’s defense of Klein-Gaffron in early February 1945. The following German radio announcement (dated 11.02.1945) describes this action as follows…

“The garrison of Klein-Gaffron (located in the area between Liegnitz and Glogau) defended against the Soviet superiority with particular toughness under the leadership of Hauptmann Schönebeck. The garrison destroyed 14 enemy tanks. Obergefreiter Alkemeier single-handedly destroyed 3 of this total with Panzerfausts.”
