During the fighting near Courland in late 1944 the 30. Infanterie-Division lost control of Hill 107.5 (located by Lake Sepeni). Due to its commanding position, the height was to be retaken on the night of the 20.11.1944. The mission was assigned to the Kampfgruppe of Hauptmann Stein, who had his own Bataillon as well as an attached Zug of Pioniere as well as some fresh officer candidates.

The group moved forward silently in total darkness, holding each other’s hands in order to avoid getting lost in the crater-saturated terrain. The first Soviet machine-gun was encountered about halfway up the hill, and it was promptly dispatched. Then, in a violent action, Stein and his troops clawed through 3 successive Soviet positions. Despite taking heavy losses, the Kampfgruppe managed to wipe out the defenders and seize control of the hill.

Hauptmann Stein would be awarded the Knight’s Cross for this vital tactical victory.
