Herbert Tröndle was born in 1919 and graduated from Waldshuter Gymnasium in 1938. After his compulsory service in the Reichsarbeitsdienst he voluntarily joined the military. At the end of 1942 he was wounded on his legs by shrapnell, causing both legs to be amputated. He left the servivce in 1943 as Oberleutnant der Reserve.
In 1943 he enrolled in Freiburg University to study economics but switched to law in 1944. During the semester 1944 - 45 he studied in Jena, continuing his study at Göttingen University after the war.
In September 1947, Tröndle found employment with the Referendardienst in Baden and graduated in 1950. In 1953 he became Hilfsarbeiter on the Bundesgerichtshof (Federal court) and in the same year he was promoted to Amtsgerichtsrat. In 1956 he returned to the Landesgericht Waldshut in order to join the Bundesministerium der Justiz (Federal department of Justice). 1958 saw his promotion to Oberlandesgerichtsrat and in 1961 Landesgerichtsdirektor in Landshut. After being appointed Leiter der Staatsanwaltschaft (Union of state attorneys) Offenburg in 1966 and member of the Landesjustizprüfungkommission (Federal judicial investigation committee), between 1968 and 1985 he was president of the Landesgericht Waldshut-Tiengen.
In 1980, Tröndl became honorary professor at the faculty of Jurisprudence at the Albert Ludwigs Universität in Freiburg.
