19.12.1941-07.08.1943: Major i.G., Ia, 19. Panzer-Division
Shortly after the ceased battle of Kursk Generalleutnant Gustav Schmidt, Div. Kdr. 19. Panzer-Division, was KIA 07.08.1943 in Beresowka together with his GS officer (Ia), Obstlt. i. G. Werner von Unger. They were surprisingly surrounded by Soviet troops whilst travelling around and committed suicide to avoid capture by the Red Army in the course of the Soviet Belgorod-Kharkov Offensive Operation.
