The following newspaper article from the Trier press (dated 01.12.1943) describes why Wriedt received the Knight’s Cross…

"In June 1943, on the southern sector of the Eastern Front, Oberfeldwebel Wriedt took over the leadership of a Styrian Gebirgs-Jäger-Kompanie after the fall of his Kompanie commander. Acting on his own initiative, he stormed forward with his comrades. The Gebirgsjäger followed the brave Oberfeldwebel, eliminating the enemy in close combat, and even when the ammunition ran out they hung onto the height they had taken until reinforcements arrived. On the 05.08.1943 Oberfeldwebel Wriedt was wounded by a shrapnel shot on the right arm and came to the hospital in Trier."
