Bingemer’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“At 21:30 on the 22.02.1943 Oberst Bingemer, commander of the Grenadier-Regiment 442, received a new mission in light of the strong enemy pressure from the north against Achtyrka and the road to the west of the city. He was to pull back towards the southwest with his Regimentsgruppe while maintaining contact with the neighbouring regiment.

Although the strong enemy was attacking the northern part of the city in the face of only weak securing forces, Oberst Bingemer decided to launch an attack against the much larger enemy force west of the Worskla bridge. He managed to reach this crossing after a heroic fight. A tank-supported enemy counterattack then created a temporary crisis that was superbly dealt with by Oberst Bingemer. Throughout the attack the toughly defending enemy suffered heavy losses in personnel as well as 7 tanks destroyed.

Oberst Bingemer succeeded in diverting those enemy reserves coming from the north and northwest towards the southwest during the course of difficult and fluid combat. By doing so the enemy pressure against the key strongpoint of Sinkiw substantially diminished, and it was possible for the Division to hold it until the Russian offensive came to a halt.

The independent initiative shown by Oberst Bingemer against a much larger enemy produced decisive results. The enemy did not succeed in their aim of outflanking the left flank of the Armee. Instead their offensive power was exhausted before Sinkiw, and with this their operational objective of thrusting through to Poltava could not be carried out.”
