On one day in the second half of August 1944 the III./Fallschirmjäger-Regiment 1 was forced to yield its positions between the Adriatic coastline and the Via Adriatika. In order to relieve the defenders Germer and his Radfahr-Zug were dispatched to the harbour area at Pesaro just before the break of dawn. The defending British was totally surprised, and several tanks in the harbour were destroyed by Germer’s men via Panzerfausts. Two British counterthrusts were also repulsed. By the time Germer’s Zug was ordered to pull back later that morning he had achieved an important success at the cost of just 1 heavily wounded and 4 lightly wounded men. He would receive the Knight’s Cross in recognition of this feat.
