Mylius’s Knight’s Cross recommendation reads as follows…

“Hauptmann Mylius has been involved in active operations as an observer and commander since the beginning of the war. After flying 148 sorties he was awarded the German Cross in Gold for his achievements against England and the Soviet Union in the years 1940-1941.

Since being awarded the German Cross in Gold he has continued to demonstrate great personal bravery and readiness for duty as a battle observer and Staffelkapitän over the course of another 195 sorties. He has achieved notable achievements during this time.

The following battlefield successes are particularly worthy of note:

1. On the 12.07.1942 Hauptmann Mylius and his Staffel attacked an assembly of around 300 vehicles at the Don bridge near Weschenskaja. A great number of tanker trucks were set afire, and the flight of the remaining vehicles was impeded by the disruption at the bridge.

2. On the 13. and 14.07.1942 he attacked the train stations at Kamensk, Dolschanskaja and Swerjewo with deadly effect. Whilst launching a high altitude attack he scored a row of direct hits on several concealed trains, and 3 of these were set afire.

3. Hauptmann Mylius demonstrated particularly good leadership and flying abilities during high altitude attacks launched against the train stations at Georgijewsk and Mineralnyje-Wody on the 04., 05. and 06.08.1942. Undeterred by the strong AA defense, he succeeded in destroying several trains and a portion of the railway facilities.

4. Hauptmann Mylius once again outstandingly distinguished himself during bombing attacks against the Caucasus ports of Anapa, Gelendshik, Noworossijssk and Temrjuk on the 08., 11., 12. and 18.08.1942. He conducted some of these attacks as single bomb drops carried out at an altitude of 5-6000 metres, and in the face of heavy AA fire at that. Ultimately, he managed to heavily damage 4 ships (some of which were in motion at the time).

The unshakable resolve of Hauptmann Mylius in combating his assigned targets has resulted in an increased operational capability of his entire Staffel.

Hauptmann Mylius is a master of conducting high altitude bombing runs with the new bomb aiming device Lotfe 7 D. His personal example and ability to pass on such skills has enabled his Staffel to achieve noteworthy accomplishments whilst attacking narrow and point targets from high altitude.

He has also distinguished himself by flying an incredible total of 183 missions within just 4 months during operations against the Soviet Union in 1942. This places him amongst the foremost of Staffelkapitäne in the ranks of the Geschwader.

Prior to this year Hauptmann Mylius had already shown a great deal of fortitude, ruthlessness and leadership skills during the campaign against the Soviet Union in 1941. During that year, on the 22.09.1941, he was shot down after he had conducted a deep-strike attack against the railway station Kharkov-East. However, he managed to reach friendly lines again following a gruelling 8-day trek of about 150 km that took him through the defensive fortifications and airfields of Kharkov as well as the marshes at Smijew. He was able to bring his entire crew back safely, and even captured a few prisoners along the way.

He is a battle-tested officer, an exemplary combat observer and a distinguished Staffelkapitän. Hauptmann Mylius is clearly worthy of receiving the high award of the Knight’s Cross to the Iron Cross.”

Of Mylius’s total of 343 sorties flown by this time, 8 were flown against Poland, 15 against France, 78 against England, 48 against the Soviet Union in 1941 and 194 against the Soviet Union in 1942.
